TBC Classic PVP Guide

Overview

Restoration Shaman is the utility healer of TBC PVP. Bloodlust is the most powerful offensive cooldown in the game — 30% attack speed for your entire team for 40 seconds. Earth Shield provides passive healing and pushback protection. Purge strips enemy buffs. Wind Shear is a 6-second ranged interrupt with no cooldown on the interrupt effect. Totems provide situational utility. Resto Shaman excels in comps that want to kill fast during Bloodlust windows but struggles when focused due to lack of mobility and escape tools.

Faction Racials

horde

Orc — Hardiness

15% stun resistance is enormous for a healer with no escape tools. Getting stunned less means more time healing. Best Horde Shaman race for PVP.

Tauren — War Stomp

AoE stun for emergency peel. Useful when melee is training you — Stomp and run. Endurance HP bonus helps survive burst. Second best option.

Draenei — Gift of the Naaru

HoT heal on yourself or teammate. Minor but it is free healing. Only Alliance Shaman option in TBC.

Arena Strategy

Shaman Fundamentals

Lesser Healing Wave is your primary heal — fast and efficient. Earth Shield on your DPS before the match starts and keep it active. Purge enemy buffs aggressively. Wind Shear is your interrupt — 6 second lockout, ranged, no cooldown on the interrupt itself (only the GCD). Totem management wins or loses games.

Bloodlust Timing

Bloodlust is the single most impactful ability in TBC PVP. Do NOT pop it at the start. Wait until: your team has a kill setup ready, the enemy healer is CC'd or in a bad position, and your DPS has cooldowns available. Then Lust for the kill. A well-timed Bloodlust wins games. A wasted one loses them.

Totem Management

Key totems: Tremor Totem (pulses Fear break), Grounding Totem (absorbs one hostile spell), Earthbind Totem (slows melee), Mana Tide Totem (mana regen for group). Place totems proactively — Tremor before engaging Warlock teams, Grounding before Mage Polymorph setups. Enemy teams WILL kill your totems — be ready to re-drop.

Purge

Purge removes one beneficial magic effect from an enemy. Purge HoTs off kill targets (Rejuvenation, Lifebloom). Purge shields (PW:Shield, Ice Barrier). Purge buffs (Freedom, BoP). Aggressive Purging makes your DPS's damage stick.

Survivability

Your biggest weakness: you have NO escape tools. No Blink, no Travel Form, no Bubble. If melee trains you, you must rely on teammates peeling and your own Earth Shield + LHW spam. Earthbind Totem helps slow melee. Nature's Swiftness for emergency instant heals. Positioning is critical — stay near teammates who can peel.

Medium (6/10)

Warriors train you. You have no escape. Earth Shield + LHW spam to survive. Earthbind Totem slows them. Wind Shear their Slam. Need teammates to peel. Grounding absorbs Intimidating Shout.

vs Subtlety Rogue

Hard (7/10)

Your worst matchup. Rogues stunlock you and you cannot escape. Earth Shield helps but stunlock into burst kills you. Tremor Totem doesn't help vs stuns. Need teammates to peel immediately.

vs SL/SL Warlock

Medium (5/10)

Tremor Totem breaks Fear. Purge DoTs... wait, you can't Purge DoTs. Purge Soul Link off the Warlock — this is huge. Wind Shear interrupts Fear casts. Curse of Tongues slows your heals — devastating.

Grounding Totem absorbs Polymorph. Wind Shear interrupts Frostbolt and Poly. Purge Ice Barrier. Tremor useless here. Positioning to avoid Poly is key.

Purge HoTs aggressively — Rejuvenation and Lifebloom. Wind Shear interrupts Cyclone casts. Cyclone is still your biggest problem. Bloodlust during CC on Druid for kill windows.

Battleground Role

You are the BG healer king. Chain Heal in team fights heals your entire group. Bloodlust during offensive pushes wins team fights. Earth Shield on flag carriers. Totems support your group — Tremor at flags, Earthbind to slow attackers, Grounding to absorb CC. Purge enemy buffs in team fights. You provide more group utility than any other healer in BGs.
